GST Calculator India — Add or Remove GST

GST 2.0 (in force since 22 September 2025) rationalized India's slabs to 5% and 18%, with a 40% demerit rate on select goods. Calculate GST both ways — add it to a base price or extract it from an inclusive amount.

How GST is calculated

Adding GST scales the base price up; removing GST works backwards from an inclusive price — a common need when invoices show only the final amount.

Add GST: total = amount × (1 + r ÷ 100)
Remove GST: base = amount ÷ (1 + r ÷ 100)

GST 2.0 — what changed on 22 September 2025

The GST 2.0 reform collapsed the earlier multi-slab structure into two main rates — 5% for merit/essential goods and 18% as the standard rate — plus a 40% demerit rate on select items like tobacco, pan masala and luxury goods. Most everyday services, electronics and financial charges fall under 18%. Notably, all credit card charges (annual fees, interest, late fees) attract 18% GST.

Frequently asked questions

What are the GST slabs in India now?

GST 2.0, effective 22 September 2025, rationalized the earlier multi-slab structure into two main rates — 5% and 18% — plus a 40% demerit rate on select goods such as tobacco, pan masala and luxury items.

How do I add GST to a price?

Multiply the base amount by (1 + rate ÷ 100). Adding 18% GST to ₹10,000 gives ₹11,800 — the GST component is ₹1,800. At 5% the total is ₹10,500 and at 40% it is ₹14,000.

How do I remove GST from an inclusive amount?

Divide the inclusive amount by (1 + rate ÷ 100). If ₹10,000 already includes 18% GST, the base price is ₹8,474.58 and the GST portion is ₹1,525.42. At 5% the base is ₹9,523.81.

Is GST charged on credit card fees?

Yes. Credit card charges — annual fees, interest, late payment fees and EMI processing charges — attract 18% GST. A ₹500 late fee actually costs you ₹590 after GST.
